when the time reaches 3 in the morning, it's time to write
on this. i'm thinking about february and driving halfway
across canada to play shows and see old friends. it seems
like it's destined to be a good time, undoubtedly cold and
full of hungry days.

in other news, attack in black's new(ish) cd "the curve of
the earth" is the disc that i've been waiting for them to make.
i think they are finally becoming one of the most exciting
young bands from ontario. good guys.

attended midnight mass with marnie tonight, also attended
an earlier service with my family. i don't know where faith &
that lightness fits in my life yet, but i know that spirituality
is something that is already in me. although, i don't know
about the organization, i have the yearning for the creator.
maybe part of it was seeing old friends and taking holy
communion again for the first time in years; that sense of
belonging and morality. this season has me in a
contemplative mood with an open heart!

i am sitting in the living room of my house, listening to
elliot smith's incredible guitar on let's get lost. the feeling
is like i missed the weather and everything i can see out
of this window, like i skipped past the colour and i came
home to less saturation. i can't wait to see some things
in my hometown again.

the things that i left in the united states are still works in
progress; friendships, recordings, sugar. i feel like i came
out of it alright, i feel like i came home with experience
and opportunity. i have the same feeling now that i had
when i was 12 years old, coming home from summer camp.
nostalgia, yearning, and the hunger for more of what i can't
have.

i guess i left with a sense of patience, this round.

now the weather shifted

we are back to cooler temperatures, and the city is
warming and cooling like a seasonal factory. i think
that my garage is always behind the fashions when it
comes to the weather this year; colder in the sun,
and then warmer in the night's shade.

without sounding more victorian (language, not location)
i would like to say that this has been a summer of
passions and music and growth. i think my life is
becoming richer with every year, and i am constantly
seeing beautiful people who surround my life. i hope
that the fall will see everyone longing for this heat
and this community that we've created on the island.

so, i'm driving home with my mother, talking about land
developments and the growing crisis (homelessness in
victoria). i've been thinking about the fundamental flaw
or problem in society, technology and modern science.

we are extending our lives to accomodate our fear of no
longer living, so that we are compromising our planet.
we are driving cars that pollute our air, we are using
chemicals that pollute our water, and i guess it's
because of convenience. i'm in between two ideals, and
one of them is a big part of my life - playing music.
i'm going over to the mainland twice this weekend, and
there will be a bus ride or two (much better than a car)
and take out food, and the ferry, and.. it's convenience.
i'm not a strong enough individual to really stick by
these moral conditions by myself, and i'm not really
into judgement on anyone else: so i'm stuck with my idea
of devolution, that i am ironically writing on a blog
on the internet!

how strange is this - finding your oldest childhood
friends on the internet. not to mention the fact that
i often find myself precocious sounding on this thing,
it's bizarre to see someone grow exponentially. to
become heartbroken, to be fashionable, to smoke and
cuss. those are the things that i find the hardest to
imagine.

i am seeing a child grow every day, seeing his neck
support his head, and his eyes focus on mine. to think!
he will one day become fashionable and heartbroken.

exploring vancouver island this weekend left me

i played a show in a chapel in the woods. it had

i'm almost ready to hibernate for christmas; sit at home,
play music, let colm jump on everything, whatever. it's
starting to feel like the holiday season, with all the
shoppers buying things at the store, and all my lack of
funds becoming apparent. i went to a really pretty market
of local artisans and picked up some little things here
and there for my family.

hibernation better'd be good for some writing because my
latest attempts have been marginally above pathetic. that

the late robert altman's newest film "a prairie home companion"
makes me teary. it could be the flu leaving my body, or the
lack of sleep i've been getting, but it strikes me in my heart.
it's a beautiful look at replaceable history; or even how we
cannot change our eventual outcomes. that frightens me. even
this medium that i write on instead of analog, decrepit paper
is a portion of change in this modern world. the internet is
becoming the new medium, taking the place of publications, and
storytelling before it.

new concept reality show: my family!
peter and i talked about it.

next time on carrick street: aidan does the
heimlich maneuver on colm to get bread dislodged
from his throat. carolyn gets ambitious and aims to
take out troublesome parents. with mixed results.

in reality (not television) peter and i went to
take some photos of open, parachute! he was guiding
me with advice on what lens to use and how the
settings interact with each other. i really like 1.8
for shooting live now, it takes good photos.

i will screw up my feelings about the show last night,
i can't place the feelings of nostalgia, pride, and
excitement into words that do justice to hearing the
illinoisemakers at st. andrew's cathedral. i will leave
it at a thank you addressed to everyone responsible for
creating the show. the promoters, the band, the secur-
ity and also the audience, everyone.

i spent a day and a while galavanting across vancouver
with jessi-anne reeves (myspace celebrity and all around
sweet person) we saw sea otters and a coelacanth, we ate
too much sushi and waited in line with gogo and horn for
too long!

i'm excited to start writing more music again, i have
catalysts and ideas and people to play with.

hey, i'm waiting for a telephone call from zoe and
tiffin, still exuberant after playing last night;
good spirits, an afterparty with more music until
3am, and no signs of slowing down.

peter gardner has been taking photos for a
number of shows that i've played in configurations,
bass/guitar/myself/band/other band/etc. and is
taking some incredible photos that capture the
goodness and intensity of live music (and make me
look good, when we both know that i make crazy
faces all the time when playing) i've told him that
it has been an honour to see his work get better,
and a great thing to see our friendship through so
many years (three or so now?)

everything else is similar to before. slight amount
of work, rambunctious younger sibling, staying up
too late, procrastination, la la la laa la.

i'll jump right in (wasting no time on meandering
introductions or whimsical, romantic jargon)

today i started learning how to play the lap steel.
one of my secret, or not so secret, passions of the
past two years has been country and western music,
and more importantly.. the pedal steel. the lap steel
is played sitting down, much like the pedal steel.
instead of using levers to create other intervals,
one is limited to the chords layed out in an "open
tuning" (like Emajor or Am6C7)

i could have called that my summer passion if i
would have started it in the.. yknow, summer. i
guess that would make it my autumn passion. such a
beautiful, vocal instrument.

music has been a kind mistress, and has granted me
the freedom of being nearly unemployed recently. i
am playing close to 15 shows in the next month and a
bit, and i wouldn't have it any other way. i think
music keeps me grounded and safe from spending too
much time in front of this computer, or other
electronic medias.

julia wakal has come and gone, if you missed her
appearance in victoria it was quite a performance,
she usually tours this area of canada
around july. oh man, i hope i can see her again.

beagle (here known as "the beag") and then went to stalk a
mom-boyfriend. didn't work out, but i had some really good
greek salad with feta and olives! we rented kiss kiss, bang

charming and self-depricating. what else can be said? next!

got a call before i left from the family, in miracle beach.
wish i didn't have practices, etc. so i could go up for a
few days. maybe the weekend possibly?

dear world of fortune,

i am writing on my computer again, after some time
of posting little snippets of what is going on in
real time (my time outside of the computer screen)
there are musical happenings and personal waitings.
there are family friends, no money, and car rides.
most importantly there are beautiful people who
bless my life, keep me together and ready to go.

i played a nervewracking showcase for david foster
with maurice, whom i have recently started playing
bass with. quite literally, 3 weeks ago jean paul
messages me asking about bass players, so i said
that i would do it. here i am 3 weeks later and i
am lucky (fortunate) enough to be playing with 3
wonderful musicians in front of one of the biggest
producers in the world.

i've also been out to see feist, saw jordan's new
wonderful coffee stand in centennial square, and
had the traditional aidan/laura/elaina waffle -
suitably dubbed ROFLs. i have more things to look
forward to, and i'll try and let you know.

i am in a place where i am actually gambling my life
over two paths in music. i know the feeling of your

morning and go to work.

for a brief period, three days or so, i was feeling
sort of disconnected and morose about writing and music.
i felt like dry hands or a tidy desk. not really moving,
at least not in the direction that i wanted to be
moving in. anyways, in medias res and i got together and
i felt lifted up. that's a beautiful thing when you feel
lifted up by music and presence. charming young men and
still on the verge of being the best band in the world,
seeing that when you are feeling dried out after writing
too much: it's energizing.

i played a wonderful show with some great young talent,
it might be a little strange to call it young talent
but it's also such a privilege to be involved with lots
of passionate music. maybe that's what is quenching a
thirst for me: passion.

regardless, i am having a wonderful week. and i hope you
are all having the same.

dearest late night,

i am awake and thinking about this past week. it has been a nice escape
and i am glad to go back to working and writing. i hope that i've imparted

i saw two films last night, and i would consider both "best of the year" picks.

the squid and the whale is a masterpiece for fans of wes anderson, who
produced the film, and also for fans of dry, ironic comedy. it's also a sad movie.
directed by noah baumbach; the story begins at the end of a marriage, and on
a tennis court. the scene is brooklyn, 1986 and the ensuing journey is
autobiographical and ultimately both funny and moving.

jeff daniels career best.

capote was totally flawless, and just downright great.

counting heartbeats played a beautifully large show last
night, and another one is undoubtedly coming up this
weekend. i like playing music.
tomorrow is the very first toco & jorge show, it is going
to be really really fun and tuesdays are clinically proven
to be a good day to see new bands.

i'm procrastinating sending mail, making calls, and
making this fucking record. i predict it will be two years
until i am done. hopefully all four of you can wait.

last night was chet baker and aidan knight walking home
from yates street. there were some dance moves in that
walk home: not a strut but a definite "love of life" walk.
after seeing akron/family who wouldn't feel like life is a
great thing, and everything is wonderful?

overcoming illness is proving to be a challenge for my wiry body.
apparently i've got a viral illness that is circulating the city; watch out!
stay indoors and drink ginger tea, gather up warm blankets and make
sure you have plenty of soup to get you through.

on other fronts; my new little band is playing in march. unfortunately,
it's at lucky bar (for all those under the legal age) but i'm sure we'll
play again at a more age friendly location. as for what it sounds like;
jangley guitar, a little keyboard, and rock beats. what's it called?

i got over a pesky cold (or flu.. or some ailment) and now i'm
back to being busy in general. i'm also getting flack in a lot of
parts in my life, and i feel like saying "fuck off": it wouldn't
change any of the problems and it wouldn't make me any
better off. so i'm facing them anyways, as precarious as they
are for me.

but in general, i'm feeling healthier and really great about
friends far away (and they know it!) and music (a new band!)
and life in general. it's really cold, but it's not bothering me.

i think i'm supposed to feel like this. invincible. and i don't
normally, but i feel like i can walk against the wind and hold
my feet on the ground. my heart and lungs feel solid; but not
dried up.

just finished up laura scotten's little blog
for posting photos and letting her get a whole bunch of images all in one spot.
i'm trying to learn all this CSS but barely have a grasp on html.
i'm not sure a computer course is going to help me even, i need someone to show
me advanced stuff so that i can layout out this blog how i want and expand my
knowledge of the interweb.

anyways, i've been intergeeking it up a little too much, maybe i'll post some
photos from a little photoshoot laura just did; i'll just have to get those photos out
of her with a little pinot.

speaking of pinot, we raced ken to the trailer park wine shop (it's currently in a
portable trailer due to renovations to the building in cook street) but when we got there..
only one bottle left.

not the quails gate either.

we had the mission hill and it tasted like cheese, but i'm sick and by no means
in a wine tasting "zone". oh brother! wine tasting zone.
i miss julia wakal's backyard and the blackberry port, and last summer.
the rain is only so much fun until you realise that you _are_ in victoria.

i'm also not a fan of drinking hard liquor or really anything to do with drunks
and stupid teenaged drinking drama; so a glass of red wine amongst friends
is all i'm really down for.

just returning from shapes & sizes (the aaargh! annual show)
and riding my bike in a brisk night, i was wondering about
making up a little group of music nerds who are into the same
kind of music as myself, and finally making a band that i want
to commit every waking hour towards. i saw peter gardner at
the show and we talked about this and that, got a new tshirt
from shapes & sizes awesome superperson, amy. she runs the
racket over at snapped twig (there on the links bar) and is
heading off and away with rory, caila, nathan, and karmin.
i'll miss those kids.

i think i'm feeling frustrated towards writing on my own, but
the control is nice. artistic control is something i'm into.
let me know of new bands that y'all like; new music. i need it.
today i made hip-hop beats with devlan roy, utilizing only
garageband and a gypsy campfires record. it is so crunchy.

tomorrow i open the store, i'm there ALL week. come by and
say hi.. you don't have an excuse unless you are julia.

i have very little to say, and haven't had a computer for about a week.
things have been happening on many levels, and now i'm listening to
curtis mayfield and harry nilsson a bunch. i feel really humbled.

i think i would associate piety and humbled quiet with this weather,
but also bits of.. euphoria? some nostalgia too.
mostly it's raining: blustery rain!

i've been trying to make an electronic synthesizer make a convincing
piano sound for about 3 hours a night, the past two nights. and have
realized now, that i like making mid-heavy piano sounds more than
trying to recreate something that i already have in the next room.
wonderful discovery.

loretta lynn is fucking sweet.
and patsy cline was a tough broad too.

i was eating some stir fry with black bean sauce today, and wrote
two songs in my head while i was munching on delicious broccoli.
i was feeling so stuck (see: writers block) and then i've been
getting energized by watching old movies, and eating asian cuisine.
maybe i'll be able to finish this album within two years. maybe.

also, i'll be back in action on my awesome music collaboration with
julia wakal and the awesome tara, so.. get awesome.

i'm leaving for a show at the victoria independent film festival;
the film is "coal miners daughter" and is about the life of loretta
lynn (who i really really like)
it has sissy spacek and tommy lee jones, was shot in 1980, but the
screening has one of the actors speaking about the film beforehand.
i'm excited about that.

also on the entertainment front, i've been watching (and rewatching)
movies, here's a brief clip about each:

candleshoe - a formative picture of my childhood; with jodie foster
as a smart kid "hood" who is hunting for treasure in castle candleshoe
under the guise of a long lost granddaughter.

a mighty wind - christopher guest mockumentary with bleedingly hilarious
portraits of folk singers reuniting. it's no waiting for guffman, but
has some great moments.

tvondvd:csi - i'm hooked into it now. i hope i die in a creatively
elaborate plot for wealth or fame, preferably encased in tar.

this makes me feel good
i sometimes just really need that ability to sort my lists alphabetically,
which is what i did for my mspace. now all my music and films are nice
and neatly alphabetized; weird?

i feel very blasé about the day overall: drums were played, songs became
frustrating, laura got older, i ate something, i drank water, etc.
this is the stuff that blogs are made of! i will most likely repeat tomorrow.
regarding songs and drums and music; i want so badly to finish what i
have started, but i don't want to finish it without heart and substance.
i miss other people to share and play with, i'm thinking of turning to the
internet and a beautiful girl with a similar operating system to rejuvenate
my creative vivre!
